ABA Therapy: The Key to Lasting Change

As a parent, having a child diagnosed with autism can be an overwhelming experience. Many parents have fears and concerns about their child’s future, and level of independence. Children with ASD have great potential! At Abria, we want you and your family to succeed.

With the help of expert ABA therapy, your child can achieve incredible things in academics, social skills, and life in general. Our team guides each child to accomplish real, meaningful changes by providing applied behavior analysis (ABA) assessments and therapy. Our BCBAs work one-on-one with each child to address difficult behaviors and challenges, and to overcome them on a daily basis.

If you’re wondering - what is Autism Spectrum Disorder? What does ABA therapy do for my child?

What is ASD?

Autism Spectrum Disorder, according to the NIH, is “ a group of complex neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by repetitive and characteristic patterns of behavior and difficulties with social communication and interaction.”

But – what does that actually mean?

In simple terms, it means that children diagnosed with ASD have a condition that affects their neurological development, causing them to act differently than other children their age. ASD can cause children to have difficulty in various areas, such as social skills and interactions, communication (both verbal and nonverbal), and emotional and behavioral control. Children on the autistic spectrum can engage in repetitive or self-harming behaviors, and can react aggressively to unexpected stimulation. They can also possess extreme intelligence and have incredible memories.

In a nutshell, children on the autistic spectrum learn, process, and react differently than other children in their age group. Each and every child processes and understands things in their own way, causing a very unique and individual set of both challenges and strengths. This is why targeted ABA therapy has been proven to have a huge impact on the growth and development on children with ASD. While it is not a cure, early intervention therapy and individualized treatment plans have proven to be enormously effective in improving the skills and behaviors of children with ASD.

How does ABA therapy work?

ABA therapy is a time-proven, research based, successful method that focuses on understanding and utilizing how behavior is influenced and developed. ABA looks at the reason behind the actions of each child, and the circumstances under which they occur to teach appropriate ways of reaching the goal of each specific behavior. The goal of ABA therapy is to develop new skills, shape and refine previously learned behaviors, and decrease problem behaviors to help each child succeed.
